Action plans and policies

See how we work to help the environment

From our Carbon Management Plan to our Sustainability Food Charter, we have plans and policies in place to help reduce the University's environmental impact in wide variety of ways.

Our approach

Creating a culture of environmental awareness

With over 5,000 students and 1,000 members of staff, the University’s activities can have a large impact on our local and global environment.

We work to improve awareness of environmental issues within our community and implement strategies to reduce our impact.

  • Staff and student inductions include sustainability information.
  • For staff, the Health, Safety and Environment team run awareness courses for all colleagues, including new starters every two months.
  • Each year, students are invited to engage in a sustainability induction session as part of their on-line training before starting at the university.
  • Students and staff with a greater interest in sustainability can get involved through becoming members of various committees and working groups.

The University has saved more than 1,275 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide since 2007, despite a 63% increase in the size of the estate.

Charges introduced for disposable cups in the restaurants on both campuses.

We have encouraged wildlife development by planting 420 saplings on campus.

Low-carbon impact buses with advanced Euro6 engines used on campus help cut pollution between stops and improve air quality.
