Inviting family or friends to your graduation

If you are planning to invite family or friends to your graduation they may need to apply for a standard visitor visa to come to the UK.

Some nationalities can enter the UK without applying for a visa in advance, but other nationalities have to apply for a Standard Visitor visa before leaving home. These nations are called ‘Visa Nationals’. You can check the Visa nationals list on the website.

You can also check if you need to apply for a visa in advance by visiting and using the “Check if you need a UK visa†online tool.

How to apply?

Applications are submitted online via the . Your visitor should read the information on this website to make sure they meet the criteria for this visa. The application fee is £115 for a 6-month visa.

What documents are needed?

Your visitor must show the visa application centre some documents. They usually include the following. Please check the above website for the latest information.

  • At least 3 months’ bank statements, payslips or some other evidence to show that they can pay for the trip and that they have enough money to support themselves without working or getting any help from public funds.
  • Evidence that they intend to leave the UK at the end of their visit (for example, a letter from their employer).
  • Proof of your graduation (see below).
  • A letter of invitation from you (see below).

Students sometimes ask us for an additional formal letter of invitation for their visitor, but this is not necessary.

Proof of your graduation

You can provide your visitor with a letter from the University’s graduation team that confirms that you, the student, have been invited to attend your graduation ceremony. Make sure the letter includes the date of the graduation ceremony and your name.

Your letter of invitation from you

Write a letter, addressed to your visitor. Include in your letter:

  • the full name of the proposed visitor(s)
  • their relationship to you (parent, friend etc.)
  • why they want to come and visit you (to attend your graduation)
  • how long they want to stay in the UK and, if possible, their proposed arrival and departure dates.
  • where they intend to stay; if they plan to stay with you, give your full address.
  • your own immigration status in the UK (for example a Student Route visa until 2024).

You can download our invitation letter template and use it as a guide on what to write. Remember to amend it to fit your and your visitor’s circumstances and make sure you provide a separate letter for each of your visitors.

If you would like more information about this visa route, please email international@chi.ac.uk.

  • Head to the Cathedral for photos outside
  • Got questions/want extra tickets? Head to the information desk at the Cathedral (see the 'How to Find Us' tab)

Entry into the Cathedral

  • Doors will open 30 minutes before the start of the ceremony
  • Students will queue at the front entrance of the Cathedral
  • Guests will queue in Cloisters (near the information desk)
    • Please note that there are 2 steps down to enter the Cathedral this way, so please contact us on graduation@chi.ac.uk with your student number if your guests require additional assistance or an alternative entrance

Taking your seat

  • Students and guests will be seated separately so that we can arrange for students to walk across the stage smoothly
  • Students will be shown to their seats by the ushers and will sit in course order (but not alphabetically within your course so you can sit with your friends)
  • Ushers will check that you have your name card
  • The first person from each course will be given an additional card with their course name on it (see 'Crossing the stage' step for information)
  • Guest seating is not reserved, please do not leave spaces to ensure everyone can take a seat
  • All students and guests are required to remain in their seats until the end of the ceremony. This is to avoid disruption to the ceremony, and to ensure that all of our students' achievements are honoured equally.

The ceremony

  • The ceremony will begin as the academics and platform party process in to the Cathedral
  • All students and guests will be asked to stand if they are able to
  • The procession will head to the stage and the Vice-Chancellor or their representative will take their seat
  • Students and guests may then sit
  • The Vice-Chancellor or their representative will be invited to give their opening remarks
  • Once this has ended, the ushers will start leading students to the stage – students are to remain seated until advised by the ushers that it is their turn

Crossing the stage

  • When you get to the front of the queue, you will be told when to hand your name card to the orator
  • If you are the first person in the ceremony or in your course, hand the course name to the orator, wait for them to read it out, then hand them your name card
  • Wait for them to read your name then walk to the centre of the stage where you will shake hands with the Chancellor or Chair of Governors – this is your moment, take your time and enjoy it!
  • You will turn to the photographer and will have your photo taken with the Chancellor or Chair of Governors (they will direct you to where the photographer is)
  • You will then exit the stage between the lectern and the pulpit (an usher will be there to direct you where to go)
  • Once you have crossed the stage, you will be directed back to your seat by the ushers
  • After all the awards have been concluded there may be an honorary award given (not all ceremonies)
  • The Vice-Chancellor or their representative will confer the awards and give their closing remarks
  • Students and guests will be asked to stand if they are able to
  • A soloist will sing and then students and guests can join in the second verse, the words are in the back of the graduation programme
  • The platform party and academics will process out of the Cathedral
  • Students will exit the Cathedral row by row when advised by the ushers to do so
  • Guests will exit the Cathedral row by row when advised by the ushers to do so
  • Each ceremony will last approximately 1 hour

Time to celebrate

  • Head to the drinks reception at the Duke & Rye to celebrate!
  • You will need your entry token to gain access to the venue. It can then be exchanged at the bar for a free glass of prosecco/soft drink for students & 20% off for guests – this token is only valid for the drinks and times stated on the token, please check this carefully
  • If the venue is at capacity, please bear with the door staff as they will let you in as soon as they can
